51. Desperate Journalist - Desperate Journalist February 2 Post-Punk https://open.spotify.com/album/0tTH8ZtJj4ECN0NpkhQVgG Ah, the circle of trends, perpetually proving that even when a popular style overstays its welcome, we can never fully bury it. Some eager future fashion seeker will always grow bored within the movements provided by the modern, and upon discovering any task of innovation far too frustrating, will naturally dig with fervour into the past, demanding answers from the forefathers. And God bless them all, truly. Recently, post-punk has become one of the more predominant resurrections, threatening to overcrowd the marketplace before they have even properly settled downÑand Desperate Journalist are at the centerpoint with them. They passionately call out all the right names (Siouxsie! Joy Division! Smiths!), accentuating the basslines, encompassing the jangly energy, the indie angst, the gothy seriousness ... yet still go largely ignored. And this is a biting shame. Because while the genre itself grows tired, this album breathes a certain genuine emotion into it, one which is slightly warmer, happier, and brighter than their counterparts, refusing any unnecessary depression or purposeful sloppiness just for the sake of old school credit. And when the post-punk ship inevitably capsizes, I fear for JournalistÕs underappreciated contribution to the revival, hence my obligation to do what I can right here.
