The Laughing Dove

Demi Rose

Fallen leaves were blowing around aimlessly on that peaceful night
Only one got left behind, and before it took on its journey into endless 'flight'
it reached out and very tenderly took her frail hand
Just as tenderly as the waves on the seas that came up to smile at her, before they broke and evaporated on the warm sand
And UNLIKE those waves that break, there's not much else in life that cannot be fixed
Of all that " they" break and all that is fake, through all of the years, though all of the sands of time
to oneself always be true - stay divine and enjoy the taste of life’s sweet wine
through all of the laughter, through all of the tears
And as he lay down beside her with bitter sweet tears in his eyes at her words,
he was losing all his fears
Her laughter was the warmest and happiest sound he had ever heard, it was part of with which his wary, lonely heart was captured
She fell into a long sleep, she had become so weary
She had been sent throughout dawns of time to comfort Mankind
Life at times can be so harsh and so unkind
He gazed down upon her, he found her so aesthetically pleasing
He marveled at her breathing, and smiled at how it sounded so surreal and soothing
just like those swirling waves on the ocean, and as free as the birds
and at how she had made his wary heart strong, how could he ever put these things down in words
Surely, nothing in his life would ever again feel wrong
it was time to sing from his soul, a new and happy song
Just like her, he was coming out of darkness, and their worlds collided as they set it on fire
his soul soared higher and higher
He was now in a place he could belong, like coming home....lost in soul fire embrace…to find this for how long do we need to roam
through all that we forsake and all that we face!

He opened one eye when the sweetest sound filled the air, and there up in the distance he saw a beautiful dove
A single white feather fell from the sky and he thought how it looked so pure, just like the girl
He remembered the sweetness of her gentle allure
He tried to remember what he had come there to forget…which part of the dream was real
and which part of the reality was but a dream
Things are not always as they seem
From a distance he heard the warm, happy sound of the laughing dove
He felt the feather stir against his chest and his heart and soul felt an unexplained and tender love
He looked longingly for the girl once more before he started to make his way home out of the forest...but there was no-one there, whereto did she run
Far beyond in the horizon, he saw the last trace of the little white dove as she flew towards and onto the pathway of the shimmering light of the rising sun
He would never forget the sight and the sound of his laughing dove...

Description:
This is one of my early poems of late 2008/early 2009.
It didn't start off with that name...
I revamped and revived it to suit "our story" after my partner (that I met on face book) came to see the kids and I in July 2009.
One lovely and mild sunny day we were relaxing and he was so struck by the sound of the Laughing Dove...
we spoke about doing lyrics with it one day (he is a musician) I jumped the gun and turned the poem into "The Laughing Dove..."
Previously it was just a figment of my imagination...
